Mid-Victorian Mettlach Villeroy & Boch tobacco jar
We are offering a Mettlach (Villeroy & Boch) tobacco jar or humidor. It is a stoneware piece that has been intricately carved with smoking scenes within gothic style decorated arches. The lid has a vine-like decoration leading up to a shaped and sturdy knop. The top rim of the jar is silvered as is the foot rim, and there is a further silver line just below the cartouches. The lid shows signs of silvering on the decoration, however this has worn over time. The base has a pottery seal with 116 impressed into it along with the VB initials. This dates it to between 1852 and 1872. Dimensions are 5.75 inches in diameter across the foot, just over 5 inches in height without the lid and 7 inches when lidded.
Condition: The piece is in very, very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The silver on the body shows rubs commensurate with age and use, the lid shows more wear to the silvering as may be expected.
We also have a set of photos and correspondence between the owner, Mr Whittaker, and the editor of Homes & Gardens magazine, Lady Georgina Coleridge, along with a letter from a celebrated ceramics and glass expert of the time (c1970) L.M. Angus-Butterworth. Interestingly, Mr Angus-Butterworth seems to attribute the piece to Doulton Lambeth!
